What Is The Curly Girl Method?

Love them or hate them. You may feel blessed or cursed with them, but curls are here to stay for many of us. Untamed waves, flyaways and frizz can be quite the challenge for many a curly girl. So much so, that I’m going to reveal everything you need to know about the Curly Girl Method - a hair care system created to take any curls from frizzy to fabulous. The method helps to find the hair’s true texture and maximise the natural waves and curls of your hair. It is a new way of doing things. Thousands of curly girls around the globe attest to its results. So let me break it down for you.

The Curly Girl method is something that every curly girl can benefit from regardless of their hair texture and YES it even works for those of us that have wavy hair. It is an approach created by Lorraine Massey who literally wrote the book Curly Girl: The Handbook. Curls can be completely transformed by using this method that essentially either reduces or removes shampoo, heat styling, sulfates and silicones, as well as cutting down on the amount of washing.

The method is about knowing your hair type and knowing your hair porosity.

Step 1 - Cleanse (once or twice per week) with either a co-wash or sulfate free shampoo

Step 2 - Condition (depending upon your curl, conditioner does not need to be rinsed out)

Step 3 - Dry & Style - be gentle on your locks, let them air dry or use a diffuser on low heat.

Proceed to scrunch or fluff (depending upon your type of curl)

DO’S

- Do use conditioners and co-washes with gentle cleansing ingredients

- Do use a wide tooth comb if required

- Do blot wet hair, never wring or rub it, to maintain your natural curl

DONT’s

- Don’t use sulfate shampoo (it is considered to harsh for curly hair)

- Don’t use heat styling tools (yep that includes your straightening iron)

- Don’t use combs and brushes (they damage your hair strands)

- Don’t use anything that contains silicones, sulfates, alcohol or fragrance

Want to know if your current hair products are curly girl approved? One way is to simply google the ingredients and run it through website isitcg.com. If you’re ready to start, I’d recommend joining one of the many FaceBook Curly Girl community groups for support and recommendations.

Give yourself at least three months on the system to really see how the method works for you. Don’t get disheartened a few weeks in if your hair is feeling limp and oily - it is all part of the curly girl journey to a delightful new way of wearing your hair.
